Today I’m pleased to announce our 4th  single-barrel bottling from our buddy Tim Malone. 

This custom production was bottled directly from the barrel exclusively for Ancona’s. 

On June 21st,  I visited Tim at J Christopher Winery in the Willamette Valley where he keeps a day job, but also houses the barrels for his personal project: Timothy Malone Wines.

Over the course of an afternoon, we tasted almost a dozen unique barrels of Tim’s 2023 vintage Pinot Noirs. 

One barrel stood out from the rest: 

2023 Timothy Malone Dundee Hills Pinot Noir “Ancona’s Secret Barrel”  IV (La Colina Vineyard)

The juice comes from La Colina Vineyard, Wadenswil Pinot Noir clones.

La Colina is one of the most pedigreed sites in the Dundee Hills and even in all of Oregon for that matter. This site was planted in 1999 on jory soil—basically decomposed Basalt. Not only is this a great vineyard, but it’s lovingly dry-farmed without irrigation which is totally key. 

Tim has been purchasing fruit from La Colina since 2012. 

And frankly, all of the barrels of Tim’s “La Colina” from 2023 were stunning—this one particular barrel is simply unreal. Basically a perfect storm.  As we tasted the wine together Tim giggled as he said “If I knew it was so good, I’m not sure I would have showed it to you.”—probably just half joking. 

As for the barrel itself—for whatever it's worth, is made by Tonnelerie Cadus—a top tier barrel maker located in Burgundy and made from French oak sourced from the Troncais Forest,  this wine was the second harvest to pass through that barrel, or “second passage” as we say. 

Tim always says that the twice used barrels make the best wines. At this stage of the game, the intense flavors of new wood are long gone and the more subtle flavors of wood delicately compliment the wine. I think this is especially true with Pinot Noir. 

It slept in barrel for 11 months prior to bottling. 

And what you get folks, is one of the most thrilling Ancona’s Custom Bottlings to date. 

As Thanksgiving draws nearer, I’d be remiss not to point out that what you have here is a quintessential accompaniment for the bird, and the Thanksgiving meal as a whole.

My Notes Read: This rare capture of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir was sourced from La Collina Vineyard in the Dundee Hills and it's completely stunning. Complex layers of cranberries, bing cherries, and fresh herbs and black tea are all accompanied by a mineral backbone chock full of irresistible reductive flint--the distinct aroma of musket fire. The Secret Barrel series continues and this is almost certainly the most serious bottling let. This is a wine truly for the Red Burgundy lovers and Considering the pedigree of the fruit--the price is surprisingly affable. 23 cases made--a single barrel. 13.5%

Note: This is wide open and drinking though—on a recent text exchange with Tim he reminded me that it will age very well. Drink now and over the next 8-10 years.
