"I don’t know why Tannat is such a sleeper grape variety. Malbec is not superior as a grape variety and yet it has experienced enormous commercial success...just goes to show, it's all about who you know. This example comes from France’s idiosyncratic South West from the appellation of Madiran which is basically the French stronghold for Tannat (although some is also grown in Irouleguy where it is frequently blended with Cabernet Franc also worth seeking out). Guy Capmartin has been making this wine since 1987 and it seems he has it down to a science. In the vineyard the grapes are farmed organically and biodynamically, harvested by hand and fermented in large concrete tanks before a slumber in old, neutral 500L barrels. Tannat is all about the tannin--and it's the texture and mouthfeel. This looks, tastes, and smells like mountain wine. The perfect wine for a good burger, brisket, and grilled eggplant."
