"The Ultreia St Jacques is produced from a blend of primarily Mencia but also including bits and pieces of Trousseau (referred to locally by the moniker 'Bastardo') and some Garnacha Tintorera (also known as Alicante Bouchet). These vines are planted in the village of Valtuille de Abajo and range from 80-120 years old--pretty crazy. The end result is certainly one of the best values to be had in Spanish wine. Ultreia leads with medium tannin that is laden with sappy and brambly black fruits and with a few years of age under its belt now--the true delight of its earthy tertiary delights beginning to become apparent: whispers of white truffle, white mushrooms, sous bois, birch bark, and subtle wafts of petrichor, black tea, and warm spice.
