2022 Mas De Valeriole "Vé" Méditerranée Rosé

ORGANIC

The Michel family farms 32 hectares located in the Camargue—a Natural preserve in Provence known for its sandy beaches, salt marshes, and the wild horses and pink flamingos that inhabit them. 


 
To the North, you find rice paddys, organic vegetables, and of course, vineyards. 
 
Although the estate has a 400-year history, the Michel’s acquired the property in the 1950s and today brothers Jean-Paul and Patrick Michel run the show. 

These gentlemen invested immeasurable time and energy prioritizing stewardship of the land they farm and this has paid enormous dividends in the quality of the wines.  


 
This bottling from Mas de Variole carries all the hallmarks of quintessential Provençal rose. 
 
“Vé” is local Provançal slang that basically means “Look at that!” 
 
I don’t know if this is the Michel family’s subtle commentary the brilliant quality to price ratio OR the incorporation of the Caladoc grape variety (a high quality crossing of Grenache and Malbec that has proved exceptional for the production of Rosé). Perhaps both. 
 
The final cépages clocks in at 70% Caladoc, 15% Merlot, and 15% Marselan (a crossing of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon)


 
Each September the grapes are harvested by night to retain freshness.
 
Fermentation employs only indigenous yeast and elevage takes place completely in stainless steel.

My Notes Read: "Look at that. Quintessential Provencal typicity--the 'Vé' stylishly balances stunning flavor concentration, delicate structure, and a pristine mineral gait. On the nose: asian pear, wild raspberries, fresh herbs, and sea salt. In the mouth it drifts across the palate like a cloud. Although very pale in the glass, there is a presence of red fruit here and along with it comes just enough body to satisfy an expansive range of cuisine from softshell crabs, fried chicken, and summer salads--you'll also be just as happy to quaff it as an aperitif. 13% cool, crisp, and easy."
