2020 Liquid Farm Chardonnay "Ancona's Cuvée VI" (Sta Rita Hills, California)

As many of you know, since the 2016 vintage we've worked with Jeff and James at Liquid Farm to produce unique, single-vineyard bottlings of Chardonnay just for Ancona's.

Not only are Jeff and James great dudes but I don't think they could make a bad wine if they tried.

The sixth Ancona’s/Liquid Farm collab-bottling was sourced from Kessler-Haak Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills.

The Ancona’s/Liquid Farm collaborations offer a unique capture of place and time.

To this day, the Ancona’s Cuvées are the only single vineyard Chardonnays bottled by Liquid Farm.

Historically our project has sampled an array of Liquid Farm’s finest fruit sources.

2016: Bien Nacido Vineyard (Santa Maria Valley)

2017: Clos Pepe (Sta Rita Hills)

2018: La Rinconada (Sta Rita Hills)

And this year, 2020 brings us to Block #2 of Kessler-Haak vineyard (upper left):

This is pretty cool because Liquid Farm has purchased this block of Chardonnay from Kessler-Haak since the inaugural bottling (2009 harvest).

After harvest--à la Liquid Farm--the Chardonnay was fermented and aged in an almost perfectly neutral French Oak barrel.

This year, the boys made us 300 bottles (no magnums)—the equivalent of a single barrel.

And it's worth noting--this is not your average California Chardonnay. More suited to the Chassagne-Montrachet lover--this is much more about the expression of minerality than fruit or wood.

I'm hearing from the Ancona's staff that this might be the best Liquid Farm Chardonnay yet...

I tasted the wine last night and I'm very happy.

Once again, Jeff and James have surpassed our expectations.

25 cases made. Practicing Organic.

Very grateful.

My Notes Read: Ancona's Cuvée #6 if for the White Burgundy Lovers! When I taste a wine like this, I can't help but smile. This is archetype Liquid Farm: concentrated, detailed, and layered--offering the perfect balance of minerality and well-portioned, balanced fruit. On the nose: crunchy yellow apples, Asian pear, fresh cream, sea salt, hazelnut and linen are punctuated by fine lines of crushed, mineral limestone. On the palate--this wine pillowy and full while remaining very fresh and light on its feet: lemon oil, fresh cotton, the essence of crushed seashells cling to the palate--lively and fresh. Any trace of oak barrel is barely detectable, a whisper in the distance. Pretty much my ideal autumnal white.

It's worth noting that Liquid Farm makes my ideal Lobster wine.

Besides lobster, LF #6 will excel with shrimp alfredo, fish and chips, and aged cow's milk cheeses.

Drink now and over the next 5 years.
