2023 Domaine des Trois Toits Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie

The wine comes to us from the hands of the great Hubert Rousseau. Monsieur Rousseau is a master of Muscadet: producing just a single Muscadet, the grand wine of the estate. 

This is effectively a one-wine domaine after all. Hubert does make a little bit of a local specialty, "Gros Plant" (made from the Folle Blanche grape variety), although as many times importer Neal Rosenthal has asked to buy some, Hubert has insisted that it all is allocated strictly to the locals, and for his own table.

That said, this is not just your average Muscadet. 

The grape, Melon de Bourgogne, is said to hale from Burgundy, although has since nestled itself in the Nantes where the great Loire River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This is prime territory to grow and produce righteous white wine. It is here in the appellation of Muscadet Sevre et Maine that the grape reaches its absolute pinnacle.

Hubert farms just three vineyard parcels. Although he vinifies each plot as its own wine, over time he has learned that the blend is greater than the sum of all its parts. According to Hubert, these three vineyards work in perfect harmony to balance an elegant but structured white wine. 

As far as winemaking is concerned, this estate is decidedly old guard. The magic is in the elevage. The wine is fermented and aged in underground concrete tanks, a practice that has nearly gone extinct. These concrete cisterns serve not just as vessels for fermentation, but as a flawless moderator of temperature keeping the freshly pressed juice inherently cool as it turns into Muscadet.

Oh yes, and the #1 wine to pair with Oysters on the Half Shell. Period.  

Likely the sharpest price in the country.

My Notes Read: Freshness is a glass. This is bright, bone dry, ultra-crisp, laser-like white wine. Just mouth-watering: notes of Meyer lemon, green apple, and Bergamot extract fill out the mid-section and earthy complexity lingers on the back end. While these zippy fruit flavors quench the thirst, layered beneath are bits of steeliness, cellar wall, mineral granite, freshly sliced white mushrooms, and Champagne yeast. There is a savory/sea salt note very reminiscent of the balance in fine Champagne. Just thirst quenching, with great staying power on the finish. This is a great wine to drink now and will prove extremely rewarding to the patient drinker over the next 3-5 years. 12%
