2021 Brea “Margarita Vineyard” Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

Though it’s a rare occasion I’m in your inbox with California Cabernet—this my friends is a simply exceptional take. 

Brea is produced by Chris Brockway at Broc Cellars in Berkley California. 

Chris is a genius when it comes to sourcing impeccable (mostly organic) fruit across the state of California and vinifying it with a natural touch.

According to Chris: “BREA Wines are made naturally, meaning no use of inoculated yeasts or bacteria. We use only native yeast to spark fermentation. A minimal dose of S02 is added 4 weeks before bottling to some wines. Nothing else is added to the wines.”

The grapes are sourced from Margarita Vineyard in Paso Robles. 

Margarita enjoys a privileged position at 1000 feet—15 miles from the Pacific.  The soil here is a combination of granitic shale and uplifted marine sediment. Generally speaking, Paso Robles can be really warm but this is an exceptionally cool microclimate—so cool in fact that some have said it’s even too cool to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon.

Well naysayers—the proof is in the pudding. 

The 2021 vintage from Brea is simply singing. 

After fermentation, the wine spends 10 months is neutral French oak barrels. 

This is wide open and ready to drink now and should deliver splendidly over the next 5-7 years. 

Thinking this is a red wine that you’re going to want to have around the house for the next few months.

My Notes Read: Wow, this is my kinda Paso Cab. Well rounded, cool-fruited, and surprisingly, remarkably glugable for the variety. Mouthwatering black cherry, vanilla, tea, and cherry spice amalgamate--draped on a structure of fine, juicy tannin that is impeccably 'ready' and satisfying. Pair it up against your finer cuts of steak or a good burger, veggie burger, and the like. 13.5%

Chris’ Note Reads: “This is a very delicate expression of California Cabernet, with mild tannins in the background from the small berries. There is also a mineral core to this wine, a common thread that you’ll find in many of the wines from this vineyard making it unique. The uplifted seabed and calcareous nature of this vineyard helps to maintain a good balanced acidity in the wine.”
