2022 Pascal Janvier “Cuvée du Rosier” Coteaux du Loir Rouge (100% Pineau d’Aunis) 

Over the years I’ve told you more than once that Pineau d’Aunis is basically my spirit animal. I’ve also said that it’s a white wine in a red dress. 
 

Candidly, Pascal is really first and foremost a white wine specialist focusing most of his domaine on vibrant, focused Chenin Blanc. Every white wine domaine though, needs at least a little bit of red wine to put on their own table. 
 

This delicate, soulful capture is just about as refreshing and detailed as youthful Loire Rouge comes. 
 

Pascal is a salt of the earth vigneron that started his career as a butcher, and in 1991 was drawn to the vineyard. 
 

Over the years, he’s quietly worked to build this domaine from scratch and annual production at this address hovers around 2000 cases which is quite small even for Loire standards. 
 

When I visited in 2019 and we shared a meal together—it was hard for Pascal to fathom that this little wine had garnered such a passionate following at Ancona’s. 
 

The Pineau d’Aunis is vinified from a 1.6 hectare parcel in a vineyard by the name of “La Troparie”.

If you can see the extreme isosceles triangle and adjacent rectangle above—those are his parcels of the vineyard.
 

As far as winemaking—the recipe is fairly simple. All grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel. 
 

The resulting wine is well served with a blitz chill—say 40 minutes in the fridge prior to pulling the cork.  
 

There are just a few hundred cases of this wine produced annually and quantities are limited.

My Notes Read: Referred to affectionately among the staff as 'PJ Rouge'-this Loire red has a history of being exceptionally allocated. The wine is featherlight, but packed with flavor: ripe cherry, cranberries, freshly cracked peppercorn, petrichor (you know, that smell after it rains on hot asphalt on an August afternoon). The finish brings with it a surprising pass of fresh tannin. 12.5%

Outward Wines is based in San Luis Obispo and celebrates special vineyard sites along the central coast. All of their sites are farmed using Organic and/or Biodynamic viticulture. 

These wines are super limited by virtue of the fact that in most cases just a few or a small handful of barrels are made.
