Good Morning Readers--

2023 Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Gavi (100% Cortese)

(around 300 cases produced annually)

When it comes to Gavi, this is pretty much the golden standard.

100% Cortese vinified by the Barolo mastermind, Domaine Francesco Rinaldi.

Small quantities come around once a year and typically evaporate before cool weather sets in.

This is for the Chablis lovers.

This is for the Muscadet Lovers.

This is for the Arneis and Italian White Lovers.

Francesco Rinaldi is an essential part of the fabric of old school Barolo—but every Barolo producer needs some white wine to put on their own table from time to time.

The family cellar is located in the heart of Barolo and dates back to 1870.

In a proverbial ocean of acceptable Gavi, perhaps it’s important to distinguish not just your standard commercial Gavi (which on average, I find quite pleasant) but instilled with the minerality of great family farming and traditional hands-off winemaking.

Since Paola and Piera have now taken over from their grandfather—the wines have continued to steadily improve.

Although winemaking has stayed virtually the same and is—and always will be quite traditional--small improvements in the vineyard mean that the wines continue to steadily improve.

Ancona’s has now been selling this family’s wines for 10 years now, and although the wines have always been excellent—it’s been a pleasure to watch the new generation move the needle in the areas of quality and expression of terroir.

The Gavi may be the only wine that the family vinifies in stainless steel.

Have a great weekend.

My Notes Read: Textbook Gavi, next level. The wine in the bottle is a simply irresistible example of Gavi—offering up laser-like, crystalline citrus, fresh cream, almond skin, and fine minerality. It will provide a flawless accompaniment top seafood risotto, spinach salad, linguini and clam sauce, and light poultry. 12.5%

Branchville Back Bar Event

Perkins Harter: Stunning Oregon on CT Debut

On Thursday September 19th, join our buddy Adam Bitker of Ungrafted Selections for a sip of Perkins Harter at the back bar in the Branchville Store as we celebrate the debut of Perkins Harter in the state of CT.

This is officially this tiny Oregon estate’s CT debut.

Come as you are for this very casual mix-and-mingle cocktail-style get together.

In other words—this is not a formal sit-down seminar. Swing by when you can. Grab a stem. Taste some wines. Talk Perkins Harter and hear about my recent visit with Shelby and Peter at their high Eola-Amity hills homestead perch.

Thursday 9/19 6-7:30pm at the Branchville Back Bar

$10/ticket, seats are limited

A portion of the proceeds generated from both ticket sales and wine sales will be proudly donated back to “The Granite” as a small honest effort to support community, the arts, and celebrate this historic space.
