2020 Podere La Cappella Chianti Classico

This bottle of wine offers a distinct reminder why I love Tuscan Sangiovese. 

Bruno and Natascha Rossini are the father and daughter team behind Podere La Cappella—a small estate named after an ancient Chapel adjacent to their vineyards and located in the sub-zone of San Donato in Poggio. 

In this small medieval village about midway between Florence and Siena, Bruno and Natascha produce olive oil, grappa, and a soulful Chianti Classico that offers a rare combination of concentration and earth without the overt influence of new oak barrels. 

And thus, in some ways this Chianti Classico defies labels as these wines definitely aren’t modern, but not staunchly traditional either. 

That said, in the grand scheme of Chianti Classico, Bruno and Natascha are relatively recent arrivals. Although Bruno acquired the estate in the 1970s—La Cappella didn’t begin to produce its own wine until 1995. 

Look at this little barrel cellar—that’s the entire operation right there: 

Production hovers around just 2500 cases a year. 

And of the several wines they produce—the Chianti Classico is the flagship. 

This is primarily Sangiovese with a small dollop of Merlot—all grown on limestone dense marl at 1100 feet of elevation.

After the grapes are harvested by hand—fermentation and maceration takes place in stainless steel prior to a solid year in mostly neutral French oak barrels. 

Farming is strictly organic.

I can’t think of a better Italian house pour as sweater weather sets in. 

Shockingly affordable quality--and this is likely the sharpest price in the country.

My Notes Read: Pretty Killer Chianti Classico—the Podere La Cappella offers a happy juxtaposition of bright, ripe fruit and rugged earthy rusticity. On the nose it smells of baby wild strawberries, sour black cherry, jammy preserves, and black tea accompanied by subtle whispers of white truffle, and freshly sliced white mushrooms. On the palate, a dry dusty cling that typically only find at the riserva level. 14.5%

It's worth noting that although I liked it right when the cork popped, as the wine had a chance to breathe, I only liked it more. On a practical note, if you want a wine that you can rely on day 2, day 3, day 4 after being opened….this is a great option. Having opened a bottle last Friday, I found that it was still singing on Tuesday which is pretty useful in my personal wine diet.
